CHOOSING PRESENCE PP. 64-66

To demystify the practice of presence and encourage its integration into everyday life.

Summary

This section reassures you that practicing presence is simple and powerful—it’s something anyone can do. You don’t need a lot of time or special training; just small moments of awareness throughout the day can make a big difference. Focusing on your breath, using simple reminders, or even setting notifications on your phone can help bring you back to the present. The key is consistency. When you commit to presence, even in small ways, you’ll start noticing immediate benefits, and over time, it can transform your spiritual journey.

Every day we are awake for approximately one thousand minutes. Taking three conscious breaths throughout the day to access God’s spiritual energy takes no time at all. It doesn’t require any special equipment, it doesn’t interfere with our surroundings, and it can be done anywhere. It becomes effortless as we inner-condition ourselves because we want to come back to the inner freedom and connectedness we experience inside.

Choosing Presence, p. 65

A Moment for Reflection

Pause for a moment and reflect on the following three questions:

  • Think about everyday activities—breathing while waiting in line, feeling the warmth of the sun, or pausing before responding in conversation. How could you bring more awareness to these moments?

  • Consider using technology, setting an intention each morning, or linking presence to routine actions like drinking coffee or walking. What method would work best for you?

  • Reflect on any experiences where you’ve paused and tuned into the present moment. Did it bring a sense of calm, clarity, or connection? How might making this a habit impact your spiritual life?

Deepening the Practice: Journal Prompt

Practicing presence doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Choosing Presence reminds us that small, consistent moments of awareness can transform how we experience life and connect with God. Simple practices—like focusing on the breath, using reminders, or pausing to fully engage with the present moment—help us shift from autopilot to true presence. The benefits of this practice can be felt immediately, and over time, they create a lasting sense of peace and spiritual connection.

Reflect on how often you are truly present in your daily life. Are there simple moments—like breathing, walking, or listening to someone—that you rush through without awareness? What small habit could you introduce to bring more presence into your day? Imagine how practicing presence consistently, even for a few seconds at a time, might shift your sense of peace and connection with God. What would that look like for you?
