CHOOSING PRESENCE PP. 8-9

It’s helpful for us to understand how emotions, particularly fear, are manipulated by the unconscious mind and ego.

Summary

Fear and other negative emotions often creep in from the unconscious mind, fueled by the ego. They trigger endless thoughts and habits that pull you away from the peace of the present moment. But by becoming more aware and choosing presence, you can recognize and manage these emotions.

We all want to be happy, to be at peace, but the workings of our unconscious mind create an inner noise that makes peace impossible because it separates us from the now and the peace of the present moment. The inner dialogue of the ego stirs our negative emotions that then spin the gears of the compulsive thinking that cause us such anxiety.

Choosing Presence, p. 8

A Moment for Reflection

Pause for a moment and reflect on the following three questions:

  • Consider whether these fears are based on past experiences, future uncertainties, or something deeper rooted in your unconscious mind.

  • Reflect on what allowed you to be present in that moment and how you might cultivate more of those experiences.

  • Do I turn to God in stillness and trust, or do I let my ego and compulsive thinking take control? What could I do differently?

Deepening the Practice: Journal Prompt

Fear and other negative emotions often arise from our unconscious mind, shaping the way we think, react, and experience life. Choosing Presence teaches that when we allow these emotions to control us, we become trapped in compulsive thinking, distancing ourselves from peace and God’s presence. However, through conscious awareness, we can shift our focus from fear to faith, from reaction to stillness, and from anxiety to trust in the present moment.

Think of a recent time when fear, worry, or anxiety took over your thoughts. What triggered it? How did it affect your actions, decisions, or interactions with others? Now, imagine responding to that situation with full presence—grounded in stillness and trust in God. How might your experience have been different? What steps can you take to recognize and shift out of unconscious fear when it arises in the future?
