Meeting Resistance With Presence

Practices for Softening Our Resistance and Returning to Peace

In Chapter 6, Resistance, Jim Heaney explores how our habitual resistance keeps us from the peace of presence. He describes resistance as the mind’s defense against change—appearing as distraction, control, avoidance, or fear. By noticing these patterns and gently returning to the present moment through conscious breathing and awareness, we begin to dissolve resistance and open ourselves to divine peace. Heaney reminds us that transformation begins not by force, but by surrender.

1. What are the common ways I resist God’s presence in my daily life?

Resistance often appears as compulsive thinking, distractions, or avoidance of stillness. It manifests through a focus on external problems rather than inner peace.

2. How does resistance manifest in my thoughts, emotions, or behaviors?

Resistance shows up as negative emotions, fear, anxiety, or a reluctance to let go of control, keeping us disconnected from God’s presence.

Practicing presence helps us recognize resistance. By observing our thoughts without judgment and consciously breathing to return to stillness, we can dissolve it.

5. What steps can I take to dissolve resistance and open myself to God’s peace?

Slowing the mind through intentional breathing as soon as you sense unease building and continue to breathe until you are grounded in the calm and peace of the present moment.
