The Practice of Presence: Where Peace Begins

Practice of Presence Teaching by Brian Mueller

The Practice of Presence begins for me in stillness. Each morning, I settle into a quiet, comfortable space, sitting with my back straight and my hand resting over my heart. This simple gesture releases a calming hormone called Oxytocin and helps me connect my vibrant inner life. The intention is what matters most. Thus, I enter this posture of stillness asking for inner transformation, knowing that real change comes through presence and encounter with the divine.

Breath is central to my practice. I often use Dr. Andrew Weil’s 4-7-8 Breath, which I find deeply relaxing and helpful. Jim Heaney suggests timing the in-breath with a sacred word such as “Yahweh” or “Jesus.” The out-breath should be even longer, releasing all the air and inviting stillness. Focusing on the breath keeps me anchored in the present moment, since thinking and conscious breathing cannot occur at the same time.

Breath also sustains my presence throughout the day. I aim to renew my awareness every hour by taking three conscious breaths while asking myself three guiding questions: Am I present now? How do I feel inside? Do I have a sense of peace within? These simple pauses interrupt the pull of unconscious thought, quiet the inner noise, and return me to God’s presence. Gradually, the repetition of this practice helps to create a strong foundation for my spiritual life.

Over the years, my practice of presence has grown from a morning ritual into a way of living. With daily practice, I more easily recognize when I’ve drifted into old thought patterns and away from peace. In challenging moments, I am able to return to presence, living more consciously from my authentic self and in deeper relationship with others.
